How To Check And Replace Your Hayward T-Cell-15 Salt Cell

Salt Cells Growing in Popularity

Due to the naturally clean feel of water produced by a saltwater generator, their gaining massive amounts of notoriety and popularity amongst pool owners. These saltwater generators use an electric charge which generates natural chlorine, thus replacing standard chlorine sanitation. This natural chlorine is much less aggravating and irritating to both the skin and the eyes of swimmers. This is hands down one of the largest contributing factors as to why so many pool owners are making the switch over to a salt system.

Generally speaking, salt cells last anywhere between three and five years but there are some factors that need to be considered in regards to their longevity. One of the first things you need to consider is the size of your salt cell, next is the size of your pool and finally you need to consider both over cleaning and under cleaning your salt cell. All of these things contribute to the overall longevity and lifespan of the cell itself.

Salt Cell Cleaning Options

Overtime, calcium can build up in the salt cell which can greatly hinder it from functioning properly. Your chlorine level is a great indicator as to your salt cells health. No or low chlorine levels often times mean that your salt cell is either bad or poorly working. It is highly recommended that pool owners clean their salt cell at least once a year with muriatic acid which helps to counteract any calcium buildup. In order to do this you need to fill up a bucket you can adequately submerge your salt cell in with one part muriatic acid to four parts water. You will then submerge the cell in that solution to remove the calcium. After cleaning your salt cell your chlorine levels should improve. If your chlorine levels do not improve after your salt cell submersion, chances are your salt cell is bad and needs to be replaced.

Let’s be honest, having a personal pool isn’t the cheapest or easiest thing to own and maintain and often times these additional expenses can really add up. This holds true when it comes to salt cell replacement. It’s not the actual effort behind replacing the salt cell, it’s the price of the salt cell that shocks most pool owners.
